Due to changing circumstances and with great sadness, the decision has been made to disperse the remaining Clifden herd.
We have been breeders of black Belted Galloways on our property in the Yarragon West Gippsland hills for nearly 20 years. Although we have always loved the cattle and everything associated with raising them, we are now in the process of winding down our farming operation before time forces that on us. As a consequence, we are looking to rehome our animals to buyers who will appreciate them as we have.
There are 17 females (registered and non-registered) and 1 A grade registered bull to be offered for sale. 6 are registered on the Australian Belted Galloway Association herd book and 12, non-registered. The group consists of pregnant cows including 2 with heifer calves at foot, cows that have just calved with bull calves at foot, pregnant heifers and heifers not yet old enough to join. 2 are due to calve imminently and will be sold with calves at foot, when able to travel. All are in good condition, tested negative for pestivirus and will come with full health records. With 1 exception (arrived as a calf at foot), all were born and bred on this farm, sired by our bulls and are accredited for Greenhams Never Ever programme.
Our strong preference is to keep the herd together and send them off to a single buyer (a generous price discount would apply). We recognise that would require a buyer with the land and resources to take on a significant increase in animal numbers. If you do have any interest in any, or all, of our available animals, we would very much like to discuss possible options with you. Of course, we would be more than happy to arrange a visit for you to look at the girls and their progeny in their familiar surroundings.

The Clifden herd of traditional black Belted Galloways originated from highly regarded bloodlines, selected and bred with commercially focused objectives. We breed contented healthy stock with quiet temperaments and outstanding carcase characteristics in terms of yield and eating quality.
The majority of our herd is A-Grade stock registered on the Australian Belted Galloway Association herdbook. We do also run some exceptional commercial animals, offering the opportunity to purchase at varying price points.
We have quality animals for sale at realistic prices across all classes: steers, cows, heifers, and at times, 3-in-1 packages (cow in calf with calf at foot) and bulls. Please contact us if you are looking for attractive easily-managed cattle for a small rural holding or star performers for a stud or commercial enterprise.
While we selectively breed with a commercial focus, there is no denying that like everyone else, we appreciate the endearing nature of the Belties and their eye-catching presence in the paddock.
Clifden Farm was also once home to a breeding herd of true black huacayas alpacas. In fact possibly the only herd in Australia that could genuinely claim all animals had a continuous black pedigree, as far back as Australian records allow.
The alpacas were loved and cared for just like the Belties here but as time has passed, it has become apparent that it is necessary to scale back farm operations. Sadly, the alpaca breeding herd has been sold and there are just 6 wonderful wethers left at Clifden now. The upside of this story is that the stud animals have moved as a group to a respected breeder who appreciates their unique pedigrees and plans to continue to breed black huacayas. Clifden genetics will be preserved while the 6 remaining wethers on farm live the good life and keep everyone entertained.
After such a long time breeding alpacas, we are very aware of the public’s interest in alpacas. We acknowledge their endearing personalities and even think we know a bit about their superior fleece quality and attributes. As such, we continue to offer a quality range of alpaca products on our online shop and attend selected markets and trade displays. There is something ‘alpaca’ to delight everyone.
